Our first Havanese, Panda, joined our family in 2001. He passed away in 2008 from liver disease, likely related to a congenital defect. That sad experience reinforced our commitment to Havanese health. No one can guarantee that a pet will not have health issues; however, steps can be taken to minimize the risk of congenital issues. All of our potential breeding dogs are tested including eyes, thyroid, heart, hips, elbows and knees. Results are recorded and made publicly available through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. Since many of the tests are not completed until at least age 2, Ruby only has a few results available. Our goal is to breed the happiest, healthiest possible dogs. If they turn out to be great show dogs, that is a bonus.
